The Richmond SPCA is the largest and oldest humane society in Central Virginia, located at 2519 Hermitage Rd.  Their hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday 11 A.M. until 7 P.M., Saturday 11 A.M. until 6 P.M. and Sunday from 12 P.M. until 5 P.M.  They are closed on Mondays, but adoptions are done by appointment.  Call 521-1307 to make an appointment.

Cat Adoption and Rescue Efforts, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation, care and adoption of cats and kittens rescued from euthanizing animal shelters in the Richmond area.  They are committed to the highest principles of humane care and obtain professional medical treatment for all felines in their care.  C.A.R.E. is an affiliate of Save Our Shelters.

Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping dogs and puppies in Virginia find safe and loving homes.  They rescue the animals from abuse, off the streets, from local pounds, and do trapping of homeless dogs and puppies to teach them to be good family members.  AARF fosters animals and brings them to adoption stands on Saturdays.  They are running short of foster homes and could use homes and volunteers to help some of our furry friends that are living in a kennel waiting for their forever home.  They supply everything you need to foster!  Their adoption location is located at the PetsMart at Libbie and Broad from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. on Saturdays.

Cat's Cradle of Greater Richmond is a kitten and cat adoption and rescue, non-profit 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization committed to rescuing and adopting cats and kittens, regardless of pedigree, age, physical condition or aesthetic appeal.  Their adoption center is located at the PetsMart at Libbie Place, 5515 West Broad Street in Richmond.  Adoptions take place on Saturdays from 11 A.M. to 4 P.M. and Sundays from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M.  Special appointments during the week can be made by contacting them at the number above.

Unique among Virginia animal welfare organizations, SOS is dedicated to the rescue, adoption and advocacy of pound animals statewide.  SOS affiliates across Virginia rescue animals from public pounds, where they would otherwise be euthanized.  SOS encourages people to begin their adoption search at their local pound, and acts as a clearinghouse for information on these shelters.  SOS works to ensure humane conditions for all pound animals, including those who cannot be saved.  Through a partnership program with the Virginia Department of Corrections--"Pen Pals"--SOS has animals for adoption who have undergone intesnse behavioral training.  SOS also operates a "Court Watch for Animal Cruelty Program," a "Humane Investigation" program and a "Companion In Arms" program designed to place animals for military personnel called to active duty.

SomeBuddies, Inc. provides temporary housing in a warm, clean and safe environment, while also providing professional medical care, sterilization and last but not least LOVE until that permanent, lifetime commitment buddy arrives.  They are also dedicated to reducing the surplus of unwanted animals through the promotion of spay/neuter.  All of their pets are spayed/neutered, tested, wormed and vaccinated prior to adoptions.  You can visit their variety of pets on Sundays from 12 P.M. to 3 P.M. at Betty Baughs Animals--5322 Patterson Avenue, Richmond, VA 23226.

Shelter Adoption and Rescue Efforts, Inc. is dedicated to the rehabilitation, care and adoption of animals rescued from euthanizing animal shelters in the Richmond area.  They promote humane education and encourage responsible pet ownership.  SHARE's first priority is to rescue as many unwanted or unclaimed adoptable dogs and pups from the Henrico County Animal Shelter as possible.

Rescuing Animals In Need is a rescue organization dedicated to throwaway, abused, injured, elderly and forgotten cats who are cast aside due to chronic health/emotional problems, severe trauma and lack of understanding.  Cats like these desperately need our help.  R.A.I.N. is dedicated to providing only the best possible in care, love, nutrition and adoption.  R.A.I.N. strives to educate and assist in helping cats and dogs and the people who love them, that it takes all of us together to make a world for all creatures and that it is our job as people to do the very best we can for our beloved animal family as well as our human one.  R.A.I.N. spays and neuters feral cat colonies and supplies food to various individuals who feed these cats.  They focus on education and understanding of animals and their behavior, and provide information on any subject, as needed, relating to animals and their care.  Financial assistance is very limited and they can only help others when they have the resources to do so.  Donations are greatly appreciated and very badly needed.  R.A.I.N. holds adoptions at various Ukrop's supermarkets on Saturday afternoons from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M.

H.A.P.P.E. is a group of volunteers dedicated to rescuing, fostering and placing homeless and at-risk cats and dogs.  They are committed to decreasing the dog and cat overpopulation through education regarding responsible pet ownership and spay/neuter programs.

Friends United with the Richmond Shelter is dedicated to collaborating with the Richmond Animal Shelter to place shelter dogs in permanent, loving homes.  They also aim to further positive relationships with other local dog adoption groups with the goal of coordinating services and facilitating adoptions.  FURS promotes spay/neuter surgery as the single most effective way to reduce the homeless dog population.

Virginia Greyhound Adoption is an all-volunteer rescue organization that finds good forever homes for retired greyhounds.  They also educate the public about what excellent pets the greyhounds can be.  Greyhounds are very calm, gentle and loving dogs.  This is why people call them "couch potatoes!"
